Glycyrrhetinic acid may undergo biotransformation to obtain derivatives with stronger pharmacological activity and fewer side effects. This study used 19 fungi to biotransform glycyrrhetinic acid and yielded two compounds namely bicyclo(14.15.27)glycyrrhetinic acid (1) and 2-ene-glycyrrhetinic acid (2) from the glycyrrhetinic acid metabolites of two fungi, Botrytis cinerea B05.10 ATCC 11542 and Aspergillus ochraceopetaliformis ATCC 12066. Compound 1 inhibited HMEC-1 cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner (IC50=239.1 µ M), but showed no significant cytotoxicity to A549 cells.

This research evaluated the hypothesis that the act of offering an incentive produces anticipated social benefits that are distinct from the benefits associated with the incentive itself. Across three preregistered studies, 3- to 5-year-old children in China (total N = 210) were given an opportunity to wait for an additional sticker (Studies 1 and 3) or an edible treat (Study 2). Rewards were dispensed via a timer-controlled box that allowed the experimenter's apparent ability to learn how long children waited to be manipulated experimentally. Children waited only about half as long when they believed the experimenter would not find out how long they waited. When children were offered three prizes for waiting, anticipated social benefits still drove behavior at least as much as the reward. The findings demonstrate that children as young as 3 years are sensitive to anticipated social rewards when responding to offers of incentives.

Background: Constipation is a digestive disorder with a high global prevalence, with approximately 20-25% of the population suffering from constipation, and the majority of constipated patients experience functional constipation (FC). Although abdominal massage is an effective intervention, there is a lack of analysis of the efficacy of abdominal massage in the treatment of functional constipation. Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of abdominal massage in the treatment of functional constipation. Methods: A computerized retrieval of randomized controlled trials on abdominal massage for functional constipation was conducted on China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database, Cochrane Database, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science until October 1, 2022. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software after the initial screening and re-screening of the literature. Results: A total of 13 papers involving 830 patients were included. The results of the meta-analysis showed that abdominal massage had better efficacy in the treatment of functional constipation. Constipated patients in the treatment group showed greater improvement in the frequency of defecation, difficulty in defecation, stool properties, and PAC-QOL scores than those in the control group. The SMD/MD values and 95% CI of each score were: SMD = 1.05, 95%CI (0.63,1.46); SMD = -1.51, 95%CI (-2.35,-0.68); SMD = 0.95, 95%CI (0.31,1.59); MD = -13.24, 95%CI (-25.83, -0.65). Conclusion: Abdominal massage can increase the frequency of defecation, reduce the symptoms of difficulty in defecation, improve stool properties, and positively affect the quality of life of patients with constipation. Hence, abdominal massage therapy shows definite therapeutic efficacy for functional constipation, providing a more specific plan for clinical treatment.

Zinc deficiency is closely related to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but the effects of marginal zinc deficiency (MZD) after birth on the heart are unknown. In this study, 4-week-old male rats were fed a low zinc diet (10 mg kg-1, 1/3 recommended nutrient intake, RNI) for 8 weeks. Echocardiography and histopathology were performed to assess the functional and morphological alterations of the heart. High-throughput proteomics was used to study the effects of MZD on cardiac protein expression. We found that MZD reduced food intake, body weight, serum zinc, and heart weight; however, the coefficient, zinc concentration, function, and histopathology of the heart were not changed. The heart proteome was altered in the marginal zinc-deficient diet group (MZG), compared with the normal zinc diet group (NZG). A total of 310 differentially expressed proteins (P < 0.05) were significantly changed by MZD, among which 163 proteins were up-regulated and 147 were down-regulated. Of these, 43 proteins are related to CVDs and 18 proteins are zinc-associated proteins. Gene Ontology and Pathway analysis revealed that 74 biological processes (BPs) and 37 pathways were significantly changed by MZD. This included six CVD-related BPs, such as regulation of heart rate, cardiac muscle contraction, regulation of ventricular cardiac muscle cell action potential, and regulation of blood pressure, and eight CVD-related pathways, such as dilated cardiomyopathy, diabetic cardiomyopathy, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Our data show that marginal zinc deficiency after birth significantly alters cardiac protein expression and pathways related to CVDs.

Preservatives in eye drops have always been the focus of people's attention. Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) is one of the most frequently used bacteriostatic agents in eye drops, which has broad-spectrum and efficient bactericidal ability. However, the inappropriate dosage of BAC may lead to high cytotoxicity. Therefore, adding low-toxic hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) can not only achieve antimicrobial effect, but also have the advantages of moisturizing and biocompatibility. In this paper, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of HACC and BAC were evaluated against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Diphtheroid bacillus and Candida albicans. Based on the MIC of each antimicrobial agent, an antimicrobial assay was performed to investigate the antimicrobial ability of disinfectant solution. Besides, cytotoxicity had also been assessed. When the HACC/BAC solution at weight ratio of 150/1 showed a highest antimicrobial efficiency and the cell proliferation rates were the highest in 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assays. Furthermore, the cell leakage was examined by UV absorption, indicating the great synergistic antimicrobial effect between HACC and BAC. What is more, the results of micromorphology research suggested that as the result of repulsive force between the two molecules, the average particle size of HACC would decrease. Finally, the impedance experiment showed that with the addition of BAC, current density would increase significantly, suggesting that more positive charge group was exposed to aqueous solution, leading the the increase of antimicrobial ability. Based on these results, HACC-BAC combination solution might be a promising novel antimicrobial group for biomedical applications.

Dickkopf-1 (DKK1), a secretory glycoprotein discovered for 'inducing generation of head', is an endogenous inhibitor of the canonical Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. It was found to be involved in many pathophysiological processes in vivo. Abnormal expression of DKK1 will alter expressions of related proteins and genes not only in canonical Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway but also in other signaling pathways. Previous studies of DKK1 focused on its function in tumors. In recent years, a large number of studies have shown that it plays an important role in embryonic development, neural regeneration, synaptogenesis and so on. Therefore, its role in neuropsychiatric disorders, such as neurodysplasia, cognitive impairment and emotional disorder, has attracted increasing attention. At present, the role of DKK1 in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the research hot topics. This article reviewed the research progress of its role in AD in order to provide new ideas and directions for further studies on the pathogenesis and treatment of AD.

The rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs in BiVO4 has limited its performance as a photocatalysis. In this paper, BiVO4 is combined with Cu2-xSe semiconductor to slow down the recombination process, and thus improve its photocatalytic activity. This is enabled by careful band structure design. The work function of Cu2-xSe is larger than that of BiVO4. Therefore, electrons flow to Cu2-xSe from BiVO4 after the composition. Accordingly, an inner field could be built, which facilitates the separation of electrons and holes. The experimental result shows that the photocatalytic efficiency of the 3 wt% Cu2-xSe/BiVO4 composite is 15.8 times than that of pure BiVO4.

Visible light communication (VLC) can provide indoor illumination while achieving high network throughput. In order to mitigate the performance degradation caused by inter-cell interference (ICI) and support multiple users, this paper utilizes the white LED synthesized by multi-color light sources as indoor illumination and signal transmissions. Compared with ordinary LEDs, multi-color LEDs not only has excellent color rendering index, but also realize multi-channel parallel transmission, which greatly improves the transmission speed of VLC. Meanwhile, we propose a user-centric (UC) quality of experience (QoE) optimization scheduling scheme for the VLC down-link system. In contrast to the traditional network-centric (NC) design, the UC scheme is based on the user-centric dynamic construction and adjustment of the network model. Furthermore, in order to further analyze the performances of the illuminations and signal transmissions of the VLC system with multi-color LED, we consider the system model under two scenarios of 3-color and 4-color synthetic white LEDs. For these two different LED composition and optimization problems, we design a new greedy algorithm to allocate optical bandwidth, and dynamically searched for the optimal access point user equipment (AP-UE) link based on optimization of the UEs' QoE values. In order to analyze the robustness of the algorithm, we further consider the influences of UEs on the transmission performance under different UEs' spatial distributions, e.g., uniform and Poisson distributions. The simulation results illustrate that the proposed scheme guarantees the UEs' QoE while offering illumination quality. Meanwhile, compared to ordinary LEDs and the traditional network-centric (NC) design, our proposed scheme can schedules more UEs.

A multivariate linear regression model was proposed to achieve short period prediction of PM2.5 (fine particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less). The main parameters for the proposed model included data on aerosol optical depth (AOD) obtained through remote sensing, meteorological factors from ground monitoring (wind velocity, temperature, and relative humidity), and other gaseous pollutants (SO2, NO2, CO, and O3). Beijing City was selected as a typical region for the case study. Data on the aforementioned variables for the city throughout 2015 were used to construct two regression models, which were discriminated by annual and seasonal data, respectively. The results indicated that the regression model based on annual data had (R2 = 0.766) goodness-of-fit and (R2 = 0.875) cross-validity. However, the regression models based on seasonal data for spring and winter were more effective, achieving 0.852 and 0.874 goodness-of-fit, respectively. Model uncertainties were also given, with the view of laying the foundation for further study.
